RIDGEFIELD — The Board of Education has selected Democrat Jonathan Steckler to fill a vacancy left from the results of last month’s election. The board was left with an open seat after Election Day when Democrat Carina Borgia-Drake, who won both a full-term and half-term seat, chose to fill the full-term spot. Steckler, who was one of three candidates to apply for the position, was chosen by board members Monday to take the remaining half-term seat. He will be on the board through 2019. “As soon as I saw the availability of the two year open slot...I immediately jumped into the ring,” said Steckler, the father of a fourth-grader in Ridgefield schools. ......

Black women voted overwhelmingly against Roy Moore. Feminism has to recognize their leadership. To some, the results of Tuesday night’s Alabama special election might look like a victory for #MeToo. Roy Moore, a man accused of sexually pursuing, abusing, or assaulting multiple teenage girls, was defeated by Doug Jones in an unexpected upset, sending an Alabama Democrat to the Senate for the first time in 25 years . But the lessons of Tuesday night are more complicated than that. According to exit polls , 63 percent of white women voted for Moore — a reminder of last year’s presidential election, when 53 percent of white female voters cast their ballots for a man caught on tape talking about...

Last year, Michael’s mother, who lives in Florida, became sick and fell into a coma. Michael, a carpenter by trade, could not afford to go help his mother as he began struggling to pay his own bills. His family in Florida used to help him financially when work was hard to come by. Because Michael was no longer able to pay for it, the registration for his truck, which he needs to work, expired. The truck has now been left unused for so long that it will not start. The 42-year-old is also trying to sell his house so that he can move to a more affordable apartment closer to town, because his current home is secluded and makes it difficult to get to the store or doctor’s appointments. ......
